Question 38

posted 04 Jun 2012, 14:20
Freedom!

Most of us want and have freedom, but it has restrictions as well. You can not do whatever you want just because you have freedom, there is rules and regulations in that to.

Some think that making something illegal is taking away the freedom as well, well that depends on the matter of subject.

Question for today is: What is freedom to you? do you feel that your freedom has been invaded some time in your life?

Not one of us is truly free, everything we do, good or bad has consequences. We have to live with these and they are not always what we expect or wish. To be totally free one would have to live the life of a hermit, free from interactions with other people. That may be the closest to complete freedom we can achieve but it is not a lifestyle that appeals to me or i suspect many others.
Of course even free from other peoples needs and wants we still would have our actions controlled by our need to feed!
Freedom is an abstract concept. Unattainable.

Freedom to me is simply the right to make choices as you desire. I do not agree with the idea that freedom is the right to make choices you accept the consequences for, in fact, the very idea of those consequences is what stifles freedom. Who is to determine right from wrong? Should that not be a freedom that we as individuals should regulate within ourselves?
At the same time freedom is not for the weak. If you are free to accost or rob me, then I am free to take your life. Both of us will suffer for our freedom of choice. (although, I assure you will suffer more :))

There's freedom under the law and some laws are unjust. When I was in the USAF many of my rights were taken away. It's interesting how the people who are charged with defending freedom have abbreviated rights.

I think freedom can never be taken away by any one.. Its in your will. You let them grab you, you're done. You feel free, that's freedom..:)

To me, freedom is the dissolution of society, where civilization crumbles and the rules, restrictions, regulations and boundaries set up by people in power are torn down, where governments collapse and churches topple, where the people control what they do and how they do it based on personal concepts of morality rather than based on social stigmas. I think freedom, to me, is anarchy.
an·ar·chy/ˈanərkē/
Noun:
A state of disorder due to absence or nonrecognition of authority.
Absence of government and absolute freedom of the individual, regarded as a political ideal.
And, despite the negative connotation that would hold, with the massive amounts of death and violence that would follow, I think the world would be better for it.
Also, there would be fewer people screwing up the planet, so that's a plus.

You and me have a very different view of anarchy. I believe that in a true anarchy there wouldn't be any negative connotation. To me anarchy is the ultimate form of order and it requires a very high morale to such a society to function.

Freedom is one of those things that is only sustainable if it is limited. In a single sentence I would sum it up as, An agreement to abide by self imposed limitations on the available choices of the individuals within a group, in order to benefit the group as a whole.

Absolute freedom would benefit only those who were the most predatory, and would make the continuation of civilisation itself impossible.

Money. If you have cash it can be used to give you the freedom you've never dreamed of, it also offers no guarantees of happiness either.
So any spares cash, send it to me please.

Freedom, to me, is the right to make choices, from all that life around offers. Good choices and bad choices alike, are part of ones freedom. Freedom, is also the right to learn from ones choices and alter those choices or stop a particular choice, especially if it will interfere with ones freedom. I have had my freedom taken away from me, once, but they did not take away my freedom of thought.

I am too young to really know what freedom is. But recently I purchased my first firearm and that is when I felt my first sense of freedom. What my grandfather tells me... America is not a free country anymore, thanks to the hippies.
