Griffith was one of television's most popular actors over several decades, best known for his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor in CBS's The Andy Griffith Show, which co-starred his longtime friend Don Knotts and launched the career of Ron Howard. The series ran from 1960 to 1986. In 1986, Griffith starred in the NBC and ABC show Matlock as Ben Matlock, a lawyer from Georgia. The show was a major success and received multiple Emmy nominations. Though wildly popular as an actor and instrumental to the success of the shows he starred in, Griffith would only receive one Emmy nomination in his career, for supporting actor in the 1981 TV miniseries Murder in Texas. His final acting appearance was in the 2008 indie movie Play the Game. Griffith was also a musician and won a Grammy award for his 1997 album "I Love To Tell the Sotry - 25 Timeless Hymns."
