Ancestry and Incest!

posted 14 Jun 2012, 12:27
Everybody here is my family! Scientifically, geneticists tell us that every single person on this planet is at the least 50th cousins with everybody else on earth. It kind of has to be that way. Think of it this way , you have two biological parents and four biological grandparents and eight biological great grandparents, it keeps doubling. If you follow your family tree all the way back to the ancient Romans, 64 generations ago. That tree would need 1 quintillion separate individuals, that is larger than the number of humans who have ever existed. To quote Bill Bryson - " You couldn't be here without a little incest - actually quite a lot of incest." Not quite ridiculous , mind you, but if you go far enough back in your family tree you're going to find that quite frequently people who were distantly related had kids. If you are currently dating or married to somebody who is from your same country and is of your same ethnicity there's a one in a five chance that the two of you share a common family member fewer than 10 generations ago.

Further more, because our society is becoming more and more mobile, our most recent common ancestor is becoming more recent. Mathematically, for every human on earth right now our most recent common ancestor probably lived only 2000- 4000 years ago. A recent study (http://tedlab.mit.edu/~dr/Papers/Rohde-MRCA-two.pdf), found that there was a person alive as early as 300 BC who is related to every single person alive on earth. The study also found that that person most likely lived in Taiwan, near a busy port city so that their descendants could spread around the world. Now that being said, you only receive half of your genetic information from your father and the other half from your mother, and as you go up your tree it is quite possible that this ancestor had no contribution to your genome. So, who are you?

Now, a little bit of information and something to ponder upon. Bacteria are so much smaller than the average human body cell, your body contains more bacteria than it contains its own cells. And forget about remembering the cells and bacteria in your body, they're constantly dying and being replaced. Even cells like brain cells which seem to live for a very long time still take in new nutrients and expel waste, meaning that within about every 5 years every single atom that used to make up your body has been exchanged. Do you remember what you were like 5 years ago, well the atoms that make up your body sure don't.

Okay, how many atoms are inside my body to begin with? How much is a billion atoms? If you were to count one number greater every second , it would take you 12 days to count to a million, for a billion it would take you 32 years. A billion is a huge number, but not for atoms, as they are inconceivably small that even if you consider a billion sodium atoms, their entire weight would only be 38 femtograms. Each invididual cell in your body contains 100 times more atoms than there are stars in the milky way galaxy. There is something that was mentioned by Bill Bryson; because our bodies contain so many atoms and because we so vigourously recycle them. Statistically, about 1 billion of the atoms in your body used to belong to Shakespeare, a billion to Beethoven, a billion to Buddha. A thousand years from now, people that live on this earth, people who will change the thinking of man, develop new methods of space travel. They will have a billion atoms inside them, that are in you right now.

So, Basically what I mean to say is that everybody is related. We are all brothers and sisters. Take a deep breath and remember that we are the result of incest carried out by our ancestors. So, the next time you say to a friend - "You are like a brother/sister to me". Statistically, you wouldn't be wrong.

‘Anonymous’ which attacked MTNL website says they will protest at Jantar Mantar on June 9

posted 08 Jun 2012, 16:23

Dear viewers TelecomTiger received a letter from the Anonymous Group which is believed to be behind the attack on MTNL website on Wednesday. We are publishing it as it is.

Dear India Press

The recent attack on the Freedom of Speech and expression in India was done by misuse of Madras High Court order which required blocking of certain content.

The HC Madras never issued any list of websites to be blocked, the DoT never issued a list of websites to be censored. Why is that ISPs are forced to block file sharing websites? Why is that instead of blocking few links the whole domain was blocked? The blocking of these websites is wrong and unjustified.”

“Torrents are widely used to distribute open source and free software such as Linux distributions, and many other books and publications that are in the public domain. Video hosting sites like Vimeo are used by millions of people every day. You no longer have access to this content even though it is perfectly legal.”

We are against this Internet Censorship in disguise.

Our objective is to repeal the ban on entire websites, where only a section of the content infringes on copyrights, and to contest the ‘intermediary guideline rules that have been effect since April 2011, besides annulment of section 69 of the amended Information Technology Act, 2008.

The April 2011 rules, an update to India''s Information Technology Act (IT Act) of 2000 (amended in 2008), popularly known as the "intermediary guidelines," instruct online "intermediaries" -- companies that provide Internet access, host online content, websites, or search services -- to remove, within 36 hours, any material deemed to be "grossly harmful, harassing, blasphemous," "ethnically objectionable," or "disparaging" by any Internet user who submits a formal objection letter to that intermediary. Under the guidelines, any resident of India can compel Google, at the risk of criminal and/or civil liability, to remove content from its site that the resident finds politically, religiously, or otherwise "objectionable."

Hence GOI, with certain individuals misuse this act, can access any content, seek it's removal and invade into privacy of citizens. This IT Act is taking away citizen's legitimate right to privacy and freedom of speech and expression. Speech censorship is illegal and contradicts freedom of speech guaranteed by Constitution of India.

We are organizing a peaceful protest on Saturday June 9, 2012 between 1600 hrs and 1900 hrs at Jantar Mantar, Delhi to express our opposition to Internet Censorship and invasion of our Privacy by Government.

We seek removal of blocks on websites and call for amendment of Information Technology Act so as to protect privacy of Indian citizens.

We do not have a country, name or face. Our cause is our only identity. We are ANONYMOUS.

I can drive a car? How?

posted 02 Jun 2012, 06:46
What is an Engine? We all drive cars and motorbikes. So, we should know what an engine is, right? Okay for those of you who don’t know. An engine is a device which converts one form of energy to another. I will not be going into the details as they may seem very complex, and trust me it is complex stuff; just basic classifications and nomenclature.

A heat engine is a device which converts the chemical energy of a fuel into thermal energy; this thermal energy gets converted to mechanical energy for the purpose of doing work.

Heat engines are classified into two categories:-
1. Internal Combustion Engines (IC Engines)
2. External Combustion Engines (EC Engines)

These two types of engines are the most general categorization of heat engines according to where the combustion takes place: Outside or Inside the engine.

External Combustion engines are rarely used in modern times, what we see inside of automobiles are Internal Combustion Engines.

Internal Combustion Engines (IC Engines) are of two types, if we classify them according to their cycle of operation:-
1. Otto Cycle engine called a Spark Ignition Engine(SI Engine) which runs on Gasoline
2. Diesel Cycle engine called a Compression Ignition Engine(CI Engine) which runs on Diesel

Spark ignition means that the combustion process inside the cylinder (combustion chamber) is initiated by means of a spark plug. A Spark plug has electrodes which generate a spark at timed intervals. These are your basic engines which run on petrol.

Compression Ignition means that the combustion process inside the cylinder (combustion chamber) takes place due to the compression action of the piston and the increase in temperature and pressure inside the cylinder. These are the ones which run on diesel.

Here is a picture of a Spark Ignition Internal Combustion Engine—

img class="lazyjs" src="//kastatic.com/images/blank.gif" data-original="https://kastatic.com/i2/u/1662016/gyANWowv1E.png " />

We see in this figure that it has four cylinders, higher the number of cylinders means the smoother the engine will run. The output of an engine depends on many factors which we will avoid discussing as they may confuse you at the moment.

Here is a working of a Four Stroke Spark Ignition Internal Combustion Engine-

img class="lazyjs" src="//kastatic.com/images/blank.gif" data-original="">https://kastatic.com/i2/u/1662016/UrobBtOQgL.gif" />

The classification of engines according to the number of strokes it takes for them to complete one working cycle will be discussed later. As for now, have fun with the extra knowledge.

A Robot! I know what you mean.

posted 31 May 2012, 11:47
Robot! Does anyone actually know what it is? The popular concept behind it all is that it looks and acts like a human being. A humanoid that will do almost anything a normal human can do and everything more.

A number of science fiction writers encouraged this idea of a humanoid robot. The first such reference to anything related to a robot dates back to 1817, when Mary Shelley published “Frankenstein”, a story of a monster created with the help of science.

The term ‘robot’ comes from a Czechoslovakian play in the early 1920’s by Karel Capek titled Rossum’s Universal Robots. The Czech word “robota” means servitude or forced worker, and when translated to English it becomes Robot.

Isaac Asimov, as many of you might know, was a great Science fiction writer who has been credited for coining the term “Robotics”. He was the one who introduced us to three principles or laws according to which these robots should function. These three Laws of Robotics are :–
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or through inaction allow a human being to be harmed.
2. A robot must obey the orders given by a human unless they conflict with the first law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence unless that conflicts with the first or second law.

These three laws are very general and are always taken into consideration for robot design.

Some examples of famous interpretations of robots are –

Gort from the 1951 movie “The day the Earth stood still”
image

R2D2 and C3PO from the “Star Wars” franchise
image

We are limited in our current technology and hence such robots are something to look forward to in the future. Also, as these robots are basically automated machines, we need to define “What is and what not is” a robot. Therefore, for a machine to be a robot it must have these three capabilities-
1. Sensing (by using sensors like vision, touch, proximity, voice, etc)
2. Decision – making (based on information received from the environment)
3. Performing (the required task at hand)

The future of robotics is a bright one, currently research is being done on humanoid robots. We might not be far from the day when a perfect android is born.

--------Now for something a bit technical--------

To understand robots, we need to know what a “manipulator” is. A manipulator is an open or closed kinematic chain of rigid links interconnected by movable joints. Here is a manipulator with a base, arm , wrist and end effector –
image

The end effector isn’t a part of the robot but an attachment which holds grippers or tools.

Now, according to the RIA(Robotics Industries Association) of USA, a robot is a multifunctional reprogrammable manipulator designed to move materials through varied motion for performing a variety of tasks.

THE END (for now, as robotics is a very vast subject and needs more than one blog, maybe some more blogs)

Who was Newton? I don't know.

posted 23 Apr 2012, 14:43

Alright, I'm going to impart some basic science knowledge on you. By impart, I mean shove it down your throat; and by basic I mean stuff that governs our entire universe. Seems simple enough, right? Trust me, when you get into the formulae of it all, it complicates your definition of complex. I'm going to make it simple so everyone can understand and give a simple explanation along the way.(Too simple?)

Let's get started.
Newton's Laws of Motion:-
They teach this in grade school , blah ! blah ! I know. It's my blog, I'm telling it to you anyway. Heehee!

1. A body is said to be stationary until and unless acted upon by an external force.

MEANING : It basically says that if there is a cup on the table, it won’t move unless your lazy ass picks it up and moves it. Other factors like gravity are also taken in consideration when you push the cup off the table ,but , we know you won’t do that. Unless , you’re filthy rich and own a Cupboard full of cups.

2. The mass of a moving body is directly proportional to the external force applied and inversely proportional to the acceleration of the body.

MEANING : This one is hard to explain, remember this formula F= m X a
where,
F - external force
m - mass of the body
a - acceleration of the body
You can remember this by "Fun equals me alone"(Yes, I made that up) . I will not go into the units of calculation. Just think, that more the body weighs (mass is not the same as weight) more force needs to be applied to move it. It will be more difficult to push an elephant than to push a baby elephant. Seems right!

3. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

MEANING : Most of you will be aware of this one. Like people say, your actions will bring upon consequences. It's somewhat similar. For example, when you row a boat (I've got big muscles coz of rowing, I keed ,I don't row, got big muscles though) you feel a resistance on the oar. You rowing is the action part, the resistance of the water to the movement of the oar is the reaction part. The harder you row, the more difficult it’ll become.

Okay, my class is officially over. Go back your Coffee drinking, ciggy smoking lives or whatever you naughty guys do behind your computer.
Ciao! (This one is for goodbye)

Opinion and what it means

posted 20 Apr 2012, 15:56
I just want to shed some light on opinions. Whose opinion do you consider to be the most reliable? Your parents? Your Spouse? Your Doctor? Your Friends?
You might be right in all cases , similarly, you could be wrong in all of them.

Statements can be categorized as fact or opinion. Fact is something that is universally true and is proven; eg : The Earth revolves around the sun, is a fact. An opinion is a result of experience and knowledge gathered over the ages; eg : Your shirt is ugly, is an opinion . As , by the viewpoint of the wearer of the shirt, his shirt might be the most beautiful thing he's ever worn.

So, whose opinion would you regard to as next to infallible?? Do you ask for opinions and file them in your brain as fact?
As human beings, we need a source of assurance that what we do lies under the norms of normalcy. This makes us question ourselves, and in doing so we ask for help from others who we consider to be more equipped in that field.

This begs the question; if I'm a doctor and have practised for over 10 years, does that make me more reliable than a doctor who has practised for 5 years? In most cases, it would be true, but, not for all.

Do we consider that our loved ones or an experienced professional could dish out blatant incorrect opinions and get away with it? Probably not, but who knows, your next door neighbour might just be a victim.

I am still confused as to what I want to say. The only thing that remains a fact is that opinions whether originating from a child or a well educated grown man can either be good for you or bad.
In the end, you as an individual, are on your own. You can be influenced , sure! But, the final decision always rests in your hands. Choose wisely, live well!

P.S – I’m not drunk. Just giving my average level of effort in trying to convey the difference between facts and opinions. And, yes, to most of you I will sound like Captain Obvious. For them, Captain Obvious Away! And for the people who think I’m drunk, the dog made me write it.

Friday the 13th

posted 09 Mar 2012, 09:01
This is something I wrote when there was a Friday the 13th on the horizon. Don't remember the exact year, but, it was around the 2007-2008 mark.
I'm not proud of it ,just happy to share it.
Here it goes------

My Friday the 13th affair rather succumbed me down into thinking if it really was possible that people had an unlucky rendezvous with death. There I was waddling my way into the living room, when accidentally I spilt warm water onto my unseemly unaware back, the pain was excruciating and sent me into a rare form of cry which was void of tears but nonetheless had every form of hurt. Ice pack here, ice pack there;into an inebriated state which had nothing to do with the consumption of alcohol. This all took place in the daylight when I had just come out my bed seeking the warm rays of the sun,but to my surprise had to deal with the grim face of fate.

The noon was very much filled with discomfort, but to my delight all went well till evening approached. I was a bit elated that day knowing that my short term affair with pain was over, less did I know that my recovery was a likely silence before the war ,more of an omen challenging me,and fate saying - "You survived once but now it's my turn to conquer."

The same evening as I had mentioned, I was happy as a fox and went into the kitchen to make some chow, never knowing what lie ahead, turned on the gas, laid the flat cooking plate(a non-stick pan as most of you might say)on the burner and prepared for the oil to simmer. Happily frying some chicken ,and after taking them off the pan I realized that most of the oil was spared, rather than wasting the huge amount of oil better save it for another fry of chicken. There ,my miser brain took a pounding from fate and less than what I thought was another encounter of a burning sensation.I picked up the pan and was just about to fill a bowl with the oil that the design of fate took an ugly turn.......

I panicked and scrutinized my moves in real time, although knowing the fact that I awaited fate's lure into pain. I gasped and let out a heavy breath accepting what may come. My eyes filled with shock and my pupils fully dilated,as I saw it with my very own eyes. The oil splattered all over,it did fall, but on the floor ,missing my feet by mere inches. Well ,maybe this time I conquered fate and it accepts its defeat. I beget something which should have not even occurred in the first place, laughing it off into the night, thanking every bit of luck I had. If it wasn't for my recklessness this story would have never been written. As, I await my encounter with fate yet again.

I apologize for the wrong grammar, I'm not good with words. :)
