Surjeet being released, not Sarabjit: Zardari's spokesman
ISLAMABAD: Hours after reports emerged that Pakistan was to free Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, the presidential spokesman on Tuesday night clarified that authorities had taken steps for the release of another Indian prisoner named Surjeet Singh who has been jailed for three decades.
"I think there is some confusion. First, it is not a case of pardon. More importantly, it is not Sarabjit. It is Surjeet Singh, son of Sucha Singh. His death sentence was commuted in 1989 by President (Ghulam) Ishaq (Khan) on the advice of (then premier) Benazir Bhutto," presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.

The Islamic fundamentalist groups condemned the pardon and pressurized the government against the decision. The pardon to Sarabjit was later retracted by the Pakistani Government agencies

well that sucks

Hi I am a Pakistani and yes I do take offense on your blog title. On your topic, it is interesting to note the following wikipedia entry:
In 1991 he was given death sentence under the Pakistan's Army Act. [2] His sentence was upheld by the High Court and later by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court rejected his mercy petition in March 2006 and upheld the death sentence. On March 3 2008 President Pervez Musharraf had rejected his mercy petition.
Just a general question, if the man in question is really innocent, why did he get rejected from top institutes so often?
I am not against sarabjeet or surjeet, it's nothing personal but I trust my judiciary system. I believe he has a lawyer to defend himself and got a chance for trial.
I also believe it is still a good sign that surjeet is being released, I hope in the future Pak-India devise a better system for prisoner exchange.
In the end, spy charges are always pretty hard, every country has a zero tolerance policy against it, even india.
