tell your friend to find a new career. When using a VPN your privacy is only as strong as the subpoena handed to the VPN provider by the Feds. From a technical standpoint though, a VPN hides your real IP address because it provides a VPN IP address.
.
Even if the VPN provider does not collect logs, if the Feds are investigating a crime they will get those logs....it really depends on which laws you are breaking and how bad the Feds want you.

A VPN (and the like) makes it tougher for the average hack to get through but it doesn't leave you impregnable; which I think is the point of the article. Just like there's no safe sex (only safer sex) there's no safe internet - only SAFER internet. I tell people this all the time when I'm cleaning off the damage on their computers from downloading all that porn. lol ;)

I assumed the VPN provider clubbed several IP's together therefore making it diffcult to track exactly who downloaded what, whether they collect logs or not.
Although I'm sure if they were approached by an official security agency they would be obliged to allow them track an individual if they so wished.

http://www.dnsleaktest.com/
If you VPN- you should go to that link to see if you have a DNS leak. If you do- the site tells how to fix it
Personally I have the site set as one of my home pages so after I have started the machine & gotten online, I check right away and fix it immediately if I do have a leak before doing anything else online

Am I the only one that sends threatening letters back to their ISP with a copy of the fair use act and a copy of the fourth amendment? I tell them they are infringing on my privacy and they need to cease and desist all activity that violates my fourth amendment. I don't use peerblocker, vpn's, or seedboxes. I have not got one letter from my ISP in over 4 years after threating to sue them for violation of my fourth amendment.

if they don't have them (the logs), no matter how much they ask or subpoena the VPN they cannot provide the information, because they don't have it. Some VPN's delete ALL of their records hourly.
But even if the Feds can't get you on that, as you said, they WILL get you. But average users and pirates don't have to be scared of that.
