Squatty (Unissued Alternate) Genius is a word tossed about altogether too casually in this, the Age of Hype. It is, however invariably - and accurately - used to describe the incandescent brilliance of pianist-composer Earl "Bud" Powell. Despite mental and physical illnesses that sometimes hospitalized and often sidelined him. Powell`s whirling dervish single notes. stabbing chords, and rhapsodic balladry took keyboard improvisation to a level that's rarely been approached since his death in 1966, two months shy of his forty-second birthday Powell was in the middle of a six-year stay in Europe, and in good shape, when these 1961 performances were made in his home base of Paris (For the complete story of exactly when they were recorded, see Orrin Keepnews' liner notes ) With alto saxophone giant Julian "Cannonball" Adderley serving as producer. Powell led his working trio ("The Three Bosses") that also included the superior French bassist Pierre Michelot and a fellow American expatriate, the innovative drummer Kenny Clarke. As the album's title indicates, the singular music of Powell's friend Thelonious Monk figures prominently. Outside of Monk himself, no other pianist knew the ins and outs of Monk's music like Powell, who was a nineteen-year-old member of trumpeter Cootie Williams' orchestra when they made the first recording of Monk's classic, "'Round Midnight." This collection contains one previously unreleased bonus track (an alternate take of "Squatty"), new liner notes by Keepnews that complement and elaborate upon Dan Morgenstern's originals, and rare photographs of the principals. Bud Powell's A PORTRAIT OF THELONIOUS presents two geniuses in sharp focus. Sharing WidgetTrackers
