I need to convert a movie of 700mb from mkv format to avi format. I have tried couple of softwares such as dream web etc. but, since they are trial versions, I was able to convert the movie only up to 3minutes. and there is a watermark on the video. please let me know if there is any registered s/w available in kat

Most of the time you can just change the extension to .avi. The way I use and play my files it isn't a problem because when I back my files up I'm leaving them as is and the DVD just becomes basically an optical hard drive. VLC is very reliable and I haven't had any problems. It really depends how you use the files if just changing the extension will work for you or not.

This is the program I use and it works great. It can also rip DVDs easily: http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

I use Total Video Converter, which does a great job... very fast.
And not only does it convert pretty much all video formats, but it also does games, audio etc., and also features formats for mobile phones. I have a registered version (meaning working serial included) amongst my torrents, which you are welcome to if you want it. Guaranteed you´ll like it!

tried a lot of converters paid and free..from mp4/mkv to avi or mpeg2 ...avs xilisoft/imtoo, wondershare/aimersoft/daniusoft, any video, aiseesoft. aone ultra..these are good...not satisfied with freemake..format factory takes a long time..not satisfied with e,m. total converter..if you want good quality and converts fast and light on system resources, used convertxtodvd4..this is the best of all...i love using any video converter also...others are good but sometimes it cannot finish the movie...

I have never done it myself, but I believe Handbrake converts .MKV files into .AVI

(I only use Handbrake to lower the size of a file, not to change it)

Try this:
http://www.freemake.com
It's a free app, converts everything to everything. I've used it a loooong time, NEVER a problem.

No ffmpeg users around? It does a great job, it's free, not-really-steep learning curve, etc
For .mkv->.avi, something like the following command should do the work:
ffmpeg -i source_file.mkv -vcodec copy -acodec copy output_file.avi
