At a Theater in Aurora, Colorado there are reports of a mass shooting during the midnight premiere of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises". Reports so far say 14 are confirmed dead and up to 20 injured.

What is the USA coming to? Why is our Country so violent? What will be next, metal detectors at movie theaters?

I am seriously angry about this. You can't feel safe anywhere anymore.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I'm sorry there are people like him in the world. Those that were attacked I pray for them and thier families. It's for his Mother and Father I feel the worst! Because regardless of loss and injury they will always be the ones that had that kid that did that crazy shit at the movies!
Ever wonder why in the USA we never had issues like this with random acts of terrorism at this level before the 50's? within the USA more people had guns and knew how to use guns then any other country in the world. The only reason a goverment would want to take away your guns would be to subject you to life without human rights.
For those that think Law Enforcement should be the only ones carrying a gun. Cops use more unnessesary force every year. They do more property damage, are the cause of more accidents then any other group just ask your local insurance agent.

Both sides of this are wrong. I disagree with any conceal and carry laws, because a gun is basically meant for hunting and target practice. There is no use in carrying around a pistol when you go grocery shopping. But guns should not be outlawed completely. People should still be able to use guns for the aforementioned hunting, target practice, home defense, etc. Conceal and carry laws make people want to justify carrying a weapon, and they are quick to want to use it in situations.

My thoughts exactly biggrin

I hate that argument tbh. Nukes are not the same as guns. Nukes can go off on their own and. You miss the point of what I said.

I'd say that's a false argument. To make a uranium 235 explode you'll need much more than just a few ounce of pressure on the trigger. But you are right. That's not the point.
I love the idea of being able to own a gun. It is novel, Hollywood makes it looks awesome, and to misuse Woody Allen's quote - it's man's 2nd most favourite organ.
In 2010, there were 12,996 murder in United States (Pop: 311 millions), 8775 were caused by firearm. By comparison, there were 600 murders in UK (Pop: 62 millions). If I extrapolate population size difference - without guns you have 3000 murders a year in population of 300 millions, with guns, you have 13000.

The fact, not my emotion of how much I love the idea of having guns, makes me conclude that having more rights - contrary to the gun sellers' propaganda - does not make your country a safer country crime wise.
Yeah, 8775 death is small, you got more by car accidents. They don't make news. But you need cars to go to work. There is a benefit to its existence more than the feel good of having a piece. Your country, your call. But if each of the 8,775 murderer were given a nuke, probably a lot more people will change their mind about people's right to own weapon.

But the point isn't how many murders were caused by guns, but how many were committed by legal gun owners vs non-registered gun owners. Changing the legislation to be stricter to legally own a firearm does absolutely nothing to the criminal who is still going to get his illegal gun.

My heart and sorrow goes out to all the poor victims. This is horrible behaviour, from an individual, who seems to have lost his sense of reasoning, and acted out on his fantasy! you can not hide from these people.
Who do we blame..? What do we do...? Who do we look to for comfort..?
Be aware and hope it never happens in your back yard...?

That is a decent argument - does the benefit of 100 millions citizen (3 in 10 people) having a gun outweight the death of additional 9000 people a year? That's is a judgement call that you have to make.

After all; remember that there is externality factor. All 250 million people who does not benefit from having a piece that gives them a feel good feeling still pay in additional chance of being blown off. We're talking about miniscule number here. Even without gun, your chance of being murdered is 1 in 100,000 a year. With it, it's 4 in 100,000 a year.

If the argument that gun control does not stop criminal owning a gun is true in US, it is true anywhere in the world. Fact is, only 600 murders in UK in 2010 - if all murderers are criminals who can get their guns anyway, there should be over 2000 murders, 1400 of which by guns. It does not stand empirical testing.

But, we are talking about an individual who, with detailed precision assembled an arsenal! Not some street thug...... and then went on to murder people!!! Innocent, Human beings.

Didn't this guy acquire his kit over the counter a week or so beforehand? Saying only criminals buying guns illegally commit gun crime is a bit redundant at this point. Yes, the majority might have legit uses for a weapon, but the minority will always spoil it.
And those saying carrying guns gives you peace of mind, that's foolish. Someone pulls a gun on you, you attempting to pull one back is just going to escalate a situation into a gunfight that would of ended when you hand over wallet/phone whatever. Your life or the 50 in your pocket. Think about it.
