Known as side loading: Please make sure in settings>applications Allow Unknown Sources box is checked. Drop desired apk file onto root of sd card (that is, not in a folder) use a file browsing app to navigate to the apk (I use Astro File Manager, or Root Explorer if your rooted) and select the apk file. It will give you an option to install the package.
