So we are trying to watch downloaded .MKV files on our Blue Ray Player, and we couldn't, so we called Sony, they told us that the files needed to be in some kind of format: SSRT. SSA or ASS files, and can anyone explain and tell me any way to convert it to this type of .MKV file? Thanks.

the things that they told u about means they didnt really know whats going on or u didnt really explain whats going correctly,,
any way update ur blueray player and it should work,,, this is case u r using an external blue ray player,,,
if u r using u r pc just use VLC to watch all u r movies from now on

Most DVD/BluRay players can be unlocked by entering a number code from the remote, I know this unlocks regional boundaries fixed by the manufacturer but not sure about file types.
Best thing is to use some converter software, I'm sure you'll find it here on KAT.biggrin

Even though I've written This several times before, I'll do it again.
.
I Love My Dinosaur xvid.!! I'll readily admit that higher quality Rips, at much smaller file sizes can be obtained using newer formats like h.264,, mkv. But, Most of us still prefer xvid. Especially now that The US (12 Years Behind) has finally caught up with Third World Countries and Manufacturers are putting Divx player in TVs and DVD players.
.
Fortunately KAT has The Best Rippers in The World. Even with that said, I still come across mkv rips that when I try to convert to xvid, mkv "artifacts" really degrade the quality. On 264 re-rips, motion skips virtually unnoticeable in the original become too horrible to watch if a "Idiot" Ripper used B-frames for reference.
.
I once fed a 24GB xvid torrent, then fed it again as a 8GB mkv. For every 1 person that downloaded the mkv, 10+ people downloaded the xvid copy. For Rips that I can't find a high quality xvid copy of, I use Any Video Converter Free. For Serious Re-Encodes, after playing with VLC to see what all needs to be fixed, I've gotten too lazy in my old age to feed My Tyrantosaurus V-dub, and started using Avidemux.
.
I Don't even own a Blue-Ray player, but I've got one on my Tiger Direct Shopping List. What You May have to do is up-convert the mkv to Blue-Ray then run through the equivalent of DVDFab (Forgot the name) to remove any encryption artifacts that the original ripper didn't remove.

It literally accepts nothing other than .MKV which disappoints me, I am trying to convert using multiple ones, I haven't had success so far, I've tried using Any Video Converter and Freemake Video Converter, I don't want Subtitles, just it converted so it will be able to play on it.

Do you know which codecs are being used for the A/V? If not you may want to check out MediaInfo MediaInfo is free, but their installer is ad-supported so just make sure to un-check all of the "special offers" during installation. Knowing the codecs inside the container can help in diagnosing the problem.

Hi Folks,
This may or may not work but this works for me on a Samsung TV. If you get a *.MKV file on a computer just rename the file to *.avi extension without having to convert the file. It should then play. Most players or TV's don't support *.MKV files. I hope this will help.

That actually sounds like good advice. Samsung also offers, like most other good brands, updates for their products on their own respective sites.
I remember I couldn't play a "Pirates of the Carribean" movie 'till I updated my Samsung BR player.

Not to mention just changing the extension is bad practice, you'll want to re-mux instead.

Play Video using VLC. On top of screen, left click tools. Go down list to Codec Information and another left click will give you both audio and video codecs used.

I just bought an HD media player that i connect it to my HD TV and connect a USB hard drive which is full of movies or videos of HD[720p/1080p] and watch it at full quality, no issues, i can choose the subtitle if included, i can choose even the Audio entitled in that video, and it is the best i've ever bought to watch movies, i have 2 Bluray player and after that HD media player i will never use that BR player maybe, unless i win or buy a BD disc to play it and i have 2 came with one player.
I have Seagate media player before, but i upgraded and bought WDTV hub and no issues, i even connected my 5.1 speakers system and enjoy the full entertainment.
