Hi. I've been recently wondering what's the difference of the two media formats. From what I've experienced, it seems to be that .mkv file is much better in terms of the quality but takes 3times the space than the .mp4 file (why?). How do they differ and what are to be taken off if a .mkv is converted to a .mp4?

mkv/mp4 are just containers..
imagine these are envelopes where you can add more letters.. MKV is the better of the two and the lesser known. as for size difference that is totally up to whoever creates whatever size of mp4 or MKV with their settings of Video size and Audio size which also includes 'different audio tracks' and/or 'subtitles' MP4 is the most popular of the two but is just starting to be added to many Standalone (DVD/Blu-ray) Players where MKV is hardly added... if only companies can keep up... I remember when .AVI started to get added... But nothing beats a lead from the computer to the flatscreen via VLC!... Have a nice day all.. It depends on how you convert them.. Like the .mp4 you set the video bitrate to higher for the picture to be more clearer and Better quality. its like this.. the higher the bitrate is the better the result in the quality.. i think most asians use .mkv and i dunno the reason but mostly people use .mp4 or .avi .mkv is more of an unix/linux open source container whereas .mp4 is an apple type file. I encode both formats, but it seems that I can get better compression using .mkv rather than .mp4. Plus I can merge more info into .mkv such as secondary audio and subtitles etc. I believe you are referring to m4v when you say it is an apple type file. They are similar, but mp4 is not an apple type file. It depends on how you convert them.. Apple opened up a whole new world with it's introduction of the mp3, and yes mp4 was developed by Apple as well as it's a quick Time format Wikipedia's awesome![]() Yes it was developed in part by apple and is based on quick time, but I "apple type file" as suggesting exclusivity to apple devices (like m4v). While mp4 is not exclusive to any specific OS. webRG1516

While mp4 is not exclusive to any specific OS. None of the file formats are "exclusive" to any device. I have a Sony Blu-ray that plays everything but DivX and avi. MP4 is mainly used for xbox360, mkv format is the best for any movie by far.

MP4's are pretty rare to me. Most series or movies I download are either in .avi or .mkv format. |
