Entitled: Anti-Death
Tag Line: The people fear him, death despises him, scientists abuse him, yet the doctor cares for him. Feel free to do with this as you like. Today was the day that I died. I felt it. I felt an essence leaving me during those few seconds whilst I tried to hold on. Yet here I am, amongst other people, living people. I had just been shot, but it was only a moment later which I was healed. Everyone was screaming and all I could see was chaos; I didn’t know whether it was because of the impossible nature of my life or due to the shooting which just occurred. Either way, I couldn’t grasp onto any logical reason I was still alive, what did it mean? My dad had always said that I was different and that one day, I would realise just how true this was. When he had said this, I couldn’t even contemplate these circumstances, who would have thought that they would be killed but still be living. I looked around me, but my vision seemed unnatural; the world looked different, it was like my eyes had been opened to the real world. I could sense people’s fear, not just see it in their eyes, but I could feel it being transmitted through every bone in my body. Suddenly the whole street fell silent, everyone vanished, but the distinguishable sense of fear remained. Some kind of dark figure was approaching from one side, and darkness appeared at another. There was no escape. The figure approached me, looking perplexed. In the instant I saw its face, I knew it was death itself, obviously I’d never seen it before, but something inside me told me that’s who it was. “You are most peculiar” it said, “I don’t seem to be able to come any closer to you, yet your soul is gone.” I replied in a confused tone, “Why me? What’s so special about me?” The question went unanswered; the figure parted, the darkness became eradicated, and in its place, light shone. I could hear something, but it sounded distant. Reality slowly returned; I had woken up to a baffled doctor. The x-ray they’d done whilst I was unconscious revealed that there were a dozen bullets inside my body, yet there was no pain, no scars, my life was not meant to be. I should have been dead; the crowd knew it, the doctor knows it and even death knew it, but something was stopping my death, something I’d never experienced before. This was no natural phenomenon; my being tore apart the unseen law and order exhibited by nature. As I lay there, clueless as to where I was, the doctor nervously walked up to me as if I had super-powers. Did I? I didn’t even know. All I really know at this point is that something unexplainable happened, and that it would indefinitely change my life forever. Although what was the point in really thinking like that? The word ‘life’ is meaningless to me now; nothing is as it seems. The doctor started off by asking me some simple questions. “So, what’s your name then?” I replied, “My name’s Ethan, where am I?” He was reluctant to tell me anything that I wanted to know and soon rushed outside to tell other people that I had awoken, but before he did, I asked him one last question, “what’s your name?” Jason, he replied. Soon, quite a few doctors and nurses came into the room. My vision was no longer impaired; I could see that it was a large, secure, presumably military room. My suspicions were soon confirmed; a high ranking military officer was the last person to step in to the room, he announced where we were and why I was here. He said, “Son, I am lieutenant here and you will be held here under my authority until we release you. First we have some questions for you.” I’m not answering unless it’s to Jason. “Who’s Jason?” He arrogantly replied. “To you, he might not be important, but he’s the doctor who was with me; he was the very first person that I saw once I was sure I was back to reality.” The lieutenant ordered for the doctor to be sent to me, he didn’t look too happy, as if I was playing games with him. Jason was on his way home when he got the call; it was supposed to be his day off, but certain, unexplainable events occurred. On his return, the lieutenant warned him not to get any close to Ethan, saying, “Who knows what he’s capable of?” He deserved to be in the military, not because he had earned a place in it, but because he had that plain fear that when something amazing happens, it is instantaneously a threat to the nation. Jason was one of the worlds’ top researchers, but he still had no clue what had happened. He tried to piece together in his mind what could possibly have happened in order to cause this. The simple answer was that no-one knew. Despite him being obviously intrigued by the situation, he knew that Ethan was completely unaware of what happened. He saw the questioning futile, which was why he left in such a hurry, there would be no gain from talking to him about it. As he stepped back in to the room where Ethan was being held captive, he had clarity in his mind; he knew what he had to do. He knew the truth about what the scientists would do once they had authority over him. Their plan was to run countless tests on him, to discover the source of this miracle as he called it. Whilst finding out the source could provide priceless information, he knew that it would be inhumane. He had sworn an oath to the very government which was now violating this teenager’s human rights. He had sworn to protect all of his patients and this is what he was about to do. He had been given a set of questions to ask Ethan, but he only needed to ask one... Jason looked straight at Ethan and said, “Are you ready?” Ethan automatically understood. He nodded, and so they attempted their escape. They ran frantically towards the exit, it was a clear path, and the military had no intention of killing Ethan, as for Jason, well, that’s part of the reason he hated those in power, they could get away with anything. Ethan knew a bit about hotwiring cars, which came in handy at this precise moment in time. Thinking about it, they’d never really planned an escape, neither of them had really decided until now. He had never actually hotwired a car himself, but as a teenage boy, it was inevitable he would find out one way or another. The sirens came on not a moment later than they had set off in the car. The penultimate moment was now; if they escaped, they were free, but if they were caught then not only would Ethan be treated inhumanely and as a criminal. However, one fact bothered Jason. It showed him how corrupt society was; he knew that if they were to succeed, he would be seen as courageous and standing up for his beliefs by the same people who would stand at his trial and condemn him if their escape failed. |
