I didn't get the GTX680 yet havent scoped out frys or bstbuy yet. usually i saw lots of xfx in bstbuy. But I will be getting a card real soon. yeah i gotta consider power consumption of the card, you have to consider that because its gonna add up to your monthly electricity bill.
a great awesome performing card with lower energy consumption than the competition, now that sounds like a winner in my book.
but yeah if it's convincing enough I might change my choice. but as of now I'm waiting for a reason to yet.
Yeah sounds like pringlescan really knows his stuff.
i added an additional $150 buffer just incase but i decided to stick with one card yet and then do SLI later on when cards get a bit more cheaper.
i was also basing my final choice with the number of pm's i got about which would be a better choice.
and also the link that i placed with my chart comparison that i built up.
if you want, could you point out which aspect the 7970 would deliver way greater throughput against GTX680?

If you want to go on bare specs the ATi 6990 is better than the GTX 670/80/90 and the 7970.

Check the forums at tomshardware and read the reviews for Nvidia cards. They overheat just as much or more as ATi cards.

You'll want to do more than look at technical specifications as they won't tell you everything about performance. Benchmarks compare two cards and their performance in games and compute applications.

Looking at this, the GTX 670 is very close to 680 performance for a much better price point. I own a 680 and am very satisfied with it so if the extra $100 isn't a big deal then it's a good choice.
(There is that part of me that wishes I had held out for the 670 and save that $100 though.

As far as Mobo CPU and Memory go, just pick your CPU and the rest sort of falls in place. Since you want intel I would recommend either the i5-3570k or the i5-2500k. The 2500k can hit higher clocks while keeping good temps, while the 3570k is newer and supports pci-e 3.0. If you want to overclock its a tough choice, if not the 3570k wins handily.

For Mobo, just get something that suits your needs, perhaps one that will allow future expansion. You'll want to go with intel's new z77 chipset.

RAM is probably the easiest. Just grab 8 or 16 GB of whatever. G.Skill Ripjaws is a popular option, I have corsair vengeance.
Exactly Kasualty21! thanks for sharing your views and the links.
yeah i see that the GTX670 is very closely matched with the GTX680. But you got a 91MHz of core clock variance between the 680 vs 670. so i guess you oughta be happy about your 680...hehehe.
I just opened the links you shared. thanks.
yeah ill compare neweggs to frys and a couple of other retailers. with frys & bestbuy, I can just get a single bus ride to them though. ama check neweggs nextday delivery yet.
leaving the car, cutting on gas costs. been given an annual CAT pass (bus) ....
thanks for your CPU recommendation.. i think i'll stick with i5-3570k your first recommend, i find it more attractive. since I don't do much overclocking anyways. newer technology is what i'll go for.
Thanks for the MOBO chipset suggestion! very much appreciated.
heard a lot of good stuff about G.Skill... i'll add them to the top of my considerations. G.Skill and Corsair. I think you got a very good awesome memory since it is a corsair! two thumbs up.
16Gb sounds really really enticing!
is there a fix now that the x86(32bit) can read more than 3gb of mem or I really need to use a 64bit win7?

Still need to use 64bit windows to see more than 3.5gigs of ram.

yeah thanks about that. i just found out today. just several minutes ago. a friend of mine told me to even check youtube there are videos of some of these GPU's smoking, literally.
I will investigate which cards from nvidia and radeon highends heat factors.
I was also looking at eVGA's water cooling ready GPU cards, just after i knew about the smokin' GPU's.

Any card can smoke. Usually when a card is seen smoking they've done something to it or it was a manufacturer issue with the production. Youtube vids aren't real good evidence of heating issues. Not every card will smoke because one does. Conditions and environment, treatment and the like contribute to it.
