They may be old posts, but users generally navigate them to get THROUGH the references ..
There can be made an script, to be use, (for administrative purpose, I meant) , when they want to delete an entry, or link that is not longer valid, scroll the entire site, and replace the text of the link specified by something like "Link removed"

Not really a site problem though.

The site is huge and ever evolving so finding all those broken links would be nigh on impossible. And what you are suggesting is simply replacing those links with some text that tells people the link is broken, but surely users are already made aware of the fact that the link is broken when they click it and are informed that the page no longer exists, so I am not sure what advantage would be gained by all that work.

IMO, Invalid or Obsolete links, i think it does, there is resources (server side) involved by making a search engine go to invalid request every time some one hit them, or even site administrator who like to go THROUGH logs files when something is pointing to "invalid or broken".. but as I said, it just IMO.
