Criminal Minds si basa sulle vicende dell'Unità di Analisi Comportamentale (BAU, Behavioral Analysis Unit), una squadra speciale dell'FBI composta da psicocriminologi, incaricati di elaborare un profilo psicologico e comportamentale degli assassini seriali, chiamati S.I.(Soggetti Ignoti), con l'intento di fornire agli investigatori delle polizie locali un valido aiuto quando ormai sembra impossibile riuscire ad individuare un serial killer.
Il team dell'Unità di Analisi Comportamentale, infatti, studia il comportamento tenuto dai criminali sulla scena del delitto e nella vita di ogni giorno, per capire i meccanismi mentali, i fattori scatenanti, e soprattutto per prevedere quali saranno le loro prossime mosse.
