London's dance duo Groove Armada consists of Tom Findlay and Andy Cato. The group formed in the mid-'90s after being introduced by Cato's girlfriend and soon started their own club, also named Groove Armada [after a '70s discotheque], which featured their spinning. By 1997 they released a handful of singles, including "4 Tune Cookie" and "At the River;" their debut album Northern Star followed the next year. 1999 saw the release of Vertigo, which made the top 20 of the British charts and silver status the UK. The album's singles achieved similar heights, including "I See You Baby," which was remixed by Fatboy Slim. The group followed this success with a stint as Elton John's opening band and the US release of Vertigo in early 2000.
Best Of gives dance music fans a chance to reassess the band and realize they've got plenty to offer past their signature tune, "I See You Baby" [included here in it's best-known Fatboy Slim mix]. Groove Armada are nothing if not incredibly diverse music fans who can groove, write catchy tunes, and know all the right people. Besides Fatboy's appearance, Neneh Cherry, Richie Havens, Nappy Roots, and pedal steel guitarist B.J. Cole are some of the perfectly picked folks who contribute. They're all purposeful additions to the band's sprawling sound, one that couples house music and downtempo's coolness with a pinch of jam band's hippie exuberance. Basically a no-frills, right-off-the-albums collection, Best Of has a near-perfect track selection with too many hits upfront being the only headscratcher [solved by a simple hit of the "shuffle" button].
