Transposée dans la France rurale de l?entre-deux-guerres, l?histoire du garçon aux cheveux roux devenu le souffre-douleur de sa vieille mère, ou comment Poil de Carotte conquiert l?affection et l?estime de son misanthrope de père. Réalisme d?un autre âge du cinéma, et tendresse - rare chez Duvivier - teintée de nostalgie.

Ce film, fait de petits tableaux cruels et pathétiques - avec par-ci, par-là, des notations poétiques - est bouleversant, grâce au jeune Robert Lynen que Duvivier avait découvert dans la rue et arraché à la misère de son milieu familial. Jamais le rôle (joué généralement au théâtre par des actrices travesties) n?a été mieux tenu, interprété avec autant de naturel, autant de sensibilité écorchée. Et Harry Baur est d?une sobriété magistrale.

Set in a rural France between the two Wars, is the story of a young redhead who is the scapegoat of his old mother. Or how does Poil de Carotte win the love and esteem of his misanthropic father. Realism from a different cinematic era plus tenderness (rare in Duvivier?s work) tinged with nostalgia.

Made up of short scenes both crual and pathetic, scattered with a few poetic touches, the film is overwhelming. Robert Lynen a young boy Duvivier discovered in the streets and rescued from the poverty of his familial environment is really fascinating. Generally played in the theatre by actresses dressed in boys, the role has never been interpreted so unaffectedly and with such naked compassion. Harry Baur is also masterfully moderate.
