For those who are having difficulty getting it to go. This worked for me anyways: Copy the main files as usual to the Valve/Portal2 folder and now here is where it can get confusing, is to copy the two bin (client.dll and server.ddl to Valve/Portal2/bin AND then to Valve/Portal2/portal2/bin folder as well. (There are TWO bin folders in the Portal2 installation).

Oi Oi!, I eventually managed to get rid of all my problems by doing these steps (provided on here separately) bit by bit.
What I had/did:
Intermittent Game Crashes: Do a fresh install of the game and before running it download and install all the updates:

Once that's done, WinRar/Unzip the files in the Crack Fix folder and copy & paste them into the Portal 2 Installation directory as instructed (remember there's TWO 'bin' folders, one in the /Portal2 folder and one in the Portal2/Portal2 folder, make sure to copy & paste the 'client.dll' and 'server.dll' files into both)
Game Won't Save: After that, right-click the Portal2 shortcut on the desktop and go into Properties, then on the Compatibility tab tick the box next to 'Run this program as an Administrator', then hit Okay or Apply - this allows files (GameSaves) to be written to that folder. Works perfectly on my laptop (Win7 64-bit) and desktop (Win7 32-bit). Hope this helps for anyone still experiencing issues; Skidrow rocks and this game's minted! smile
