Sturm und Drang captures the current feelings and attitudes of young freethinking musicians Sacha Robotti and Cord Henning Labuhn. Although, while it draws on literary influences, it isn't an attempt at setting a soundtrack to these famous Germanic literary works. The album is born out of and inspired by the nocturnal lives and the creative surroundings of the duo, who currently reside in Berlin and Buenos Aires. Robosonic deliver intelligent and multidimensional dance music that is at home in clubs, decadent penthouse parties, alternative festivals and demonstrations, posh discotheques, illegal raves, fashion shows and obscure private soir??es from Berlin and Milan to New York and Buenos Aires, but also on your walkman and the ghettoblaster in your kitchen. The framework of the album is a humorous, cynical exposure of bourgeois German culture and language. It can be interpreted as a critical discourse in the constant struggle to describe music through words, while the music follows its own dramaturgy and aesthetics. The design of the cover is a tongue in cheek reference to the famous publisher 'Reclam' and its reknown small yellow books every German pupil had to labour over in high school. In the CD booklet you will find "Interpretationen zu Sturm und Drang", acting as the "literary" part of the album project, taking the concept of the successful club vinyl maxis "Yasmin" (inkl. KOLETZKI & MEINDL und THE COCONUT WIRELESS Remixes) and "Die Verwandlung" (inkl. JESSE ROSE und CHRISTOPHER JUST Remixes) one step further. Dancefloor-Dialectics --------------------- In the same way that their public do not hail from a homogenous scene, Robotti and Labuhn come from different musical and social backgrounds, but form an intact and energy charged team that manages to find solidarity and consensus in the studio, during performances and on the road. Productions and remixes (not to mention bootlegs) by Robosonic can already be found in thousands of DJ's record cases and hard drives long before the release of this debut album. Parts of the album evolved over a period of 1-2 years but with the nearing move/split of Robosonic (Buenos Aires -- Berlin), Sturm und Drang is the fruit of an intensive three month production period where previous trans-atlantic ideas solidifed and where not only artistic visions were shared but also a home, money and sustenance. The Companions -------------- The two multi-instrumentalists, DJs and labelrunners were supported by a host of other musicians who supplied classical and electronic instrumentation. Saxophone contributions by Sir Speck Wildhorse were chopped up, distorted and twisted and used in the track "Sprachfehler" which was originally used in the remix of Le Hammond Inferno (Speech Defects). Vocals on "Die kleine Prinzessin" are provided by the fantastic jazz singer Joanna Dong from Singapore, accompanied by Jonas Hauer on the Wurlitzer-piano and the Theremin as well as Gergely Mohl on cello. The otherworldliness of "1984" is built up using strings and reverberated layers of deepness and flows into "Die unertr?ñgliche Leichtigkeit des Seins", a rippling reminiscence of nostalgic moments. Jo Kaa's soulful voice in the theatrically poppy "Kabale und Liebe" was reworked a little with the aid of modern technology. The lyrically plaintive nature of his words is betrayed by the surprising end in which a female voice pleads for something more down-to-earth. A Warcraft machinima music video, produced by Pusteblume and Kim K??ster, adds to the poppy weirdness of the song. Robosonic is surrounded by an international creative network that communicates an artistic vision through artwork, painting, design and video. The process ----------- Field recordings from daily life above and below ground in Berlin and experimental sound design are craftily assembled with quotes and musical open-mindedness to form a determined and original style. Tools included re-soldered video games and guitars dragged through analog synthesisers. "Kaputt in Hollywood" (named after a book by Charles Bukowski) shows the humorous and undogmatic side of Robosonic and makes unashamed references to their activities in the mash-up and bootleg world. "Yasmin", a bleepy feel-good hymn, is the first single of the album, released on vinyl on their own label Diskomafia / Undercoverart. "Traumnovelle" uncovers the suffering of unrequited love, capturing it in a twisted groove. Influences from hip-hop culture such as scratching techniques are strikingly obvious in "Die Blechtrommel". Technoid minimalism and life in the metropolis characterise "Die Kinder vom Kotti", a trip into the hearts of junkies and joggers and also an ode to Berlin's Kreuzberg Zentrum. With the similarly subtle album closer "Die Verwandlung" the listener is tempted into a contemplative after-hours mindstate assisted by the soundscapes of Jo B??nemann. Despite widely diverging influences and their daring iconoclastic style, "Sturm und Drang" has one main line: Freedom, initiative and emotion in a driving 4/4 beat. +-------------------+ | About the authors | +-------------------+ Robosonic are Schall & Robotti, Robotti & Schall. Cord Henning Labuhn, born 1984 in L??denscheid, has produced and released hip-hop and breakbeat records since 2003 mostly on his own label Undercoverart under the pseudonym Schall. In Berlin he founded the imprint 'BrokenBootlegs' with Gaucho (and later also with DJ Shir Khan on board) whose releases sold around the world. Years of DJ existence, studies in politics and sociology in Berlin have now led to the pursuit of wisdom and love in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Sacha Robotti, born 1980 in Brussels, has produced and released electronic dance music since 2004 on his own imprint Diskomafia which is now a symbiotic-autonomous part of the label Undercoverart. The Italian / German polyglot studied and worked in Belgium, Scotland, Italy, Australia, the USA and Afghanistan before settling down in Berlin where he is now committing himself 100% to sound. After years of DJ existence, classical cello education, studies in architecture and a Masters degree in Sound Studies at the Berlin University of the Arts he is now in search of "The Hit" in Berlin. +---------------+ | Release Notes | +---------------+ Props to UPE Crew for the fast release! This one is not meant as a battle and purposely not labeled as a PROPER, since yours is just fine.
