La historia trata sobre la vida de Kenshin Himura, un asesino que causó auténtico pavor por el hecho de ser tan eficaz y ser tan sólo un adolescente durante la transición de la era Tokugawa a la Restauranción Meiji (1866-1869). Es en ese período cuando recibe el apodo de Battousai por los que lo temen.
