Accel World (アクセル・ワールド?) is a Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by HiMA. It has been adapted into two manga series and it will be adapted into an anime and video game.



In the year 2040, Neuro-synchronization, a technology system that allows humans to manipulate their five senses has become widespread where people can access the internet and enter virtual worlds. Haruyuki "Haru" Arita is a short, fat boy who is constantly bullied, causing him to have low-self esteem. To escape the torment of real life, he logins in the schools virtual world network where he plays squash alone where he always gets the highest score. One day, Haru attracts the attention of the Student Council Vice-President, Kuroyukihime, who offers him to join a secret program called Brain Burst which allows a person to make time appear to stand still in their surroundings by "accelerating" their brainwaves in the real world. Unfortunately, there is a limit to how many times a person can accelerate which uses Brain Burst points and the primary way to get more points is to fight other Brain Burst users in a virtual reality massive multiplayer online (VRMMO) fighting game and defeat them. However, if a user loses all of his/her points, the Brain Burst program will uninstall itself and the user's ability of Brain Burst will be removed. Kuroyukihime wants Haru's help as she wishes to reach Level 10 and meet the creator of Brain Burst and learn its true purpose. But in order to do that, she must defeat five Level 9 users who just so happen to be from "The Six Kings of Pure Color", the leaders of the six most powerful factions in the Brain Burst world. For helping him, Haru agrees to help Kuroyukihime to not only repay her but overcome his weaknesses.

Haruyuki Arita (有田 春雪 Arita Haruyuki?)
Voiced by: Yūki Kaji
The main male protagonist. Also known as Haru by his close friends, he is a short and fat boy with low self-esteem until he meets Kuroyukihime. His Brain Burst Avatar is Silver Crow. Although he is generally smart and careful when it comes to everyday life, Haru tends to get reckless while protecting Kuroyukihime. He views her as a mentor, friend, and lover simultaneously, which has given him the utmost respect and loyalty toward her and her army. His avatar on non-accelerated network is a small pig.
In the Accelerated World, Silver Crow is known to be a one-of-a-kind avatar since it's capable of flight. Its tall, thin frame is completely devoid of weapons, having Haru forced to fight his enemies barehanded. When its special ability is activated, Silver Crow sprouts wings.
Kuroyukihime (黒雪姫 Black Snow Princess?)
Voiced by: Sachika Misawa
The main female protagonist. Beautiful and popular, she is also the Student Council Vice-President. Her Brain Burst Avatar is Black Lotus. She herself was formerly the Black King, although she was driven into hiding after killing the previous Red King. She values Haru as more than a subordinate and is often the voice of reason to him when he is willing to go to extremes to protect her. Prior to her hospitalization, she confesses to Haru and tells him that she loves him.
Chiyuri Kurashima (倉嶋 千百合 Kurashima Chiyuri?)
Voiced by: Aki Toyosaki
Haru and Takumu's childhood friend. Although she is dating Takumu, she also cares a lot for Haru. Her Brain Burst Avatar is Lime Bell. After Takumu and Haru come clean with her and tell her about the Accelerated World, she demands the program for herself. Kuroyukihime wonders if she is mentally strong enough to use Brain Burst, but the group eventually gives in.
Takumu Mayuzumi (黛 拓武 Mayuzumi Takumu?)
Voiced by: Shintaro Asanuma
Haru's childhood friend and Chiyuri's boyfriend. His Brain Burst Avatar is Cyan Pyle, and he makes use of the enhanced reflexes he obtained in the Accelerated World to have an advantage in the kendo tournaments he attends in real life. After Kuroyukihime is hospitalized, Takumu attempts to assassinate her until he is stopped by Haru and decides to join their cause. He is a mentor figure to Haru due to his advanced knowledge of the Accelerated World.

Light novels
Accel World began as a light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by HiMA. Originally, Kawahara entered the first novel in the series into ASCII Media Works' 15th Dengeki Novel Prize in 2008 and the novel won the Grand Prize.[1] The first novel was published by ASCII Media Works on February 10, 2009 under their Dengeki Bunko imprint.[2] As of December 2011, ten volumes have been published.[3]
Manga
A manga adaptation titled Accel World illustrated by Hiroyuki Aigamo began serialization in the May 2010 issue of ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko Magazine. The first two tankōbon volumes were released on July 27, 2011.[4][5] A four-panel comic strip manga titled Accel World. (あくちぇる・わーるど。?) illustrated by Ryuryū Akari also began serialization in the May 2010 issue of Dengeki Bunko Magazine. The first tankōbon volume was released on July 27, 2011.[6]
Anime
A TV anime series adaptation has been announced.It will come out on April 6, 2012.[7] The opening theme "Chase the world" will be sung by May'n and the ending theme "unfinished" by Kotoko feat. FripSide. [8]
Video game
It will be adapted into two video games.[9] They will be simulation games for the PS3 and PSP with the first as Accel World Stage:01 Awakening of the Silver Wings.
