In de zomer van 1979 sluit de Amerikaanse Luchtmacht een sectie van Area 51. Alle materialen worden per trein vervoerd naar een opslagplaats in Ohio. De trein wordt echter aangereden door een truck en ontspoort. Een groepje kinderen, dat bezig is om hun eigen zombie-film te maken met hun \'Super 8\' camera, stuit op de ravage. Al snel wordt vermoed dat het niet om een ongeluk gaat, als er plotseling verdwijningen plaatsvinden en onverklaarbare dingen gebeuren. Een lokale sheriff probeert het mysterie te ontrafelen, maar wil hij de angstaanjagende en onmenselijke waarheid wel weten?
