Nick Lang (MICHAEL J. FOX) är en populär filmstjärna som desperat försöker att komma bort från sin vanliga roll som "snäll pojk". Lang tror att han ska få en roll som tuff kriminaldetektiv om han bara tillbringar lite tid med en riktig sådan, och lämnar därför Hollywood för att vara på New Yorks gator tillsammans med detektiv John Moss (JAMES WOODS). Moss, som är en hårdför polis i hälarna på en hänsynslös seriemördare, vill absolut inte ha någon irriterande partner. Men hans chef - som älskar Nick Langs filmer - insisterar, och Moss måste hitta på något sätt att hålla Lang borta medan han jagar mördaren.
