La paléontologue Kate Lloyd part en Antarctique rejoindre une équipe de scientifiques norvégiens qui a localisé un vaisseau extraterrestre emprisonné dans la glace. The Thing sert de prélude au film culte de 1982, réalisé par John Carpenter, dont il reprend le titre.
