SINOPSIS
En un pequeño poblado de la costa de Nueva Zelanda, la gente aborígen de la tribu Whangara cree que su origen procede de mil años atrás, de un único ancestro, Paikea, que escapó de la muerte, tras volcar su canoa, montando a lomos de una ballena. Hasta nuestros días el jefe de los Whangara, el "Whale Rider", el Paikea, siempre ha sido un primogénito y un hombre. Pero Pai, una niña de 11 años, cree que ella es la destinada a ser la nueva jefe. Su abuelo Koro sigue aferrado a las tradiciones de elegir un líder masculino. Pai quiere a Koro más que nada en el mundo, pero ella decide luchar contra él y contra mil años de tradiciones para cumplir su destino.
