Storyline: Tratto dall'omonimo fumetto della Marvel, il film racconta della giovinezza di due amici che scoprono di avere poteri speciali, Charles Xavier e Erik Lensherr; del loro lavorare assieme, con altri mutanti, contro la più grande minaccia che il mondo abbia affrontato; del loro allontanarsi causa un dissidio che li vedrà diventare arcirivali con i nomi di Professor X e di Magneto. Il film è ambientato negli anni '60, all'alba dell'era spaziale, l'epoca di JFK. Un periodo storico all'insegna della Guerra Fredda, in cui l'intero pianeta era minacciato dalle crescenti tensioni fra Stati Uniti e Russia. L'era in cui il mondo scoprì l'esistenza dei mutanti.
